Inquiry

At Newington Primary School, inquiry learning is delivered through a transdisciplinary “throughline” approach.

Throughlines are overarching themes that guide learning across the school, with all students exploring the same big ideas at a level appropriate to their age and stage of development. This shared focus helps create meaningful connections across subjects and encourages deeper understanding over time.

Through these inquiries, students:

  • build knowledge and understanding of the world around them
  • remain actively engaged and curious in their learning
  • develop the ability to think critically, ask questions, and reflect deeply
  • take increasing ownership (student agency) over their learning
  • strengthen key skills such as communication, organisation, and research

The development of these inquiry skills culminates in the Senior Unit, where our Grade 5 and 6 students participate in an Inquiry Showcase. This event provides an opportunity for students to share their learning with the school community, celebrating their growth as independent, life-long learners.
