At Newington Primary School, we believe that children have the right to come to our school and learn in a positive social environment, which is committed to and supportive of their needs. The wellbeing of our students and staff is of the utmost importance to us. The school has high expectations for the achievement of all students who are encouraged to become engaged learners able to participate effectively in a cooperative classroom environment. The school believes in a positive approach to student management, focusing on personal responsibility, self-discipline and a constructive contribution to our school of learners.
A strong focus on wellbeing underpins our approach to learning. We prioritise a positive and proactive approach, supporting students to develop self-awareness through the Zones of Regulation and to build a practical toolkit of strategies that help them remain focused and ready to learn. The explicit teaching of the Respectful Relationships curriculum each week further supports students to build positive connections, embrace diversity, and develop resilience.
Therapy Dogs, from 4 Paws Therapy work with students twice a week. They help develop positive connections to school and build students self-esteem.
As part of our commitment to promoting and recognising positive behaviour, students are acknowledged on a weekly basis for consistently demonstrating an aspect of our mission statement. Recognition is given through the awarding of a wristband by the student’s classroom teacher. Specialist teachers may also nominate students, ensuring that positive behaviours are acknowledged across all learning areas and settings within the school.
Our values are explored by staff and students and each term we look for students who demonstrate one of these values. They are acknowledged at the final assembly of each term.
These definitions were developed by our student leaders and are displayed around the school.
